Why not start off the festival with a kickass, no-holds-barred-hold-up flick from South Korea? South Korea has been pumping out some of the best films in the world recently and with this, director Kim Jee-Won (A Tale of Two Sisters) has pulled out all the stops in this all-out train robbery-action-movie set in the 1930’s. Obviously indebted to Spaghetti Western legend Sergio Leone, this rollicking western is filled with crooked gangsters, Japanese soldiers, Korean freedom fighters and Chinese bandits all on the hunt for an elusive treasure. Not bad for 10 am on a Thursday. KaPow!
OK so this isn’t going to happen everyday but here’s a second must see today. To start things off right. So, from the world’s most compulsive and prolific director (43 directorial efforts since 2000) comes this weird mash of My Science Project meets Japanese Karaoke video meets digital apocalypse love story…well at least that’s what the trailer with no english subtitles makes it look like. But then again Takashi Miike movies are always, well, something else.
