ONLY PICK: Paranoid Park

It’s an interesting trend that 50 year old men like Larry Clark and Gus Van Sant keep making films about adolescents. Van Sant’s latest is a murder mystery set in Portland, where during the last week of summer a couple of skateboarding buddies go to skate the infamous O’Bryant Square, better known as Paranoid Park. Based on the 2006 novel by Blake Nelson, the story follows the friends as they are part of an accidental (or is it?) death that quickly becomes a homicide investigation. Working with world famous renegade cinematographer Chris Doyle, Van Sant cast most of the leads through ads on MySpace, resulting in a naturalistic film that feels honest and real. Stepping away from the cold and calculated construction of his latest teen films like Elephant, this little independent – filled with real skating and real kids – is kind of like The Outsiders for today’s generation. –AOT
