There Will Be More Wars

Looking back on Bush’s post-9/11 presidency, there is obviously a lot to be more than unhappy with. It’s been terrible. But if I had to pinpoint one atrocity that overshadows all the rest, it would be the war in Iraq. It’s not a tough choice, and the reasons are obvious. War should always be a last resort, and in the case of Iraq, it wasn’t. Argue that the world is better off without Saddam Hussein all you want. Thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis are dead, and it is because of misguided American foreign policy, and lies, and stupidity.

Bush was the perfect president for the neo-cons for one reason: he was a moron. He didn’t know a thing about the world or the nuances of diplomatic relations, and ultimately functioned as a blank slate for Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the numerous other hawks he surrounded himself with to project their imperialist ideals upon. It may be cliched to say that he was merely a puppet, but I truly believe that was the case. Still, obviously, fuck him.

Watching ABC’s interview with Palin last night was genuinely scary. She may have been able to pronounce Saakasvili’s last name correctly, but she clearly had no grasp of the topics she was being grilled on. Not knowing what the Bush doctrine is? Fucking kill me. However, war with Russia? Sure! War with Iran? You bet! Israel’s cock? Choking on it! She parroted whatever McCain’s aides and the GOP heads told her to, without having a clear grasp of what it was she was actually saying.

This is reminiscent of Bush in the most troubling way: it is when simple minded people are given unimaginable power that blunders like Iraq happen. McCain could die, and this woman could be president. He’s old, and looks like death. If this should happen, who will she rely on to make the important foreign policy decisions that the next president will undoubtedly be forced to make? If it’s the same people who coached her through that interview last night, we can be assured of one thing: there will be more wars.
