ONLY PICK: The Last Mistress
From Catherine Breillat, everybody’s favourite French filmmaker on female sexual frustration, comes possibly her most exciting and accessible film featuring everybody’s favourite European bad girl, Asia Argento. After having spent years making movies about female sexuality in today’s world, Breillat has turned her perceptive and explicit eye to the French nobility of the 1850s. Based on the novel by Barbey d’Aurevilly, this period piece is filled with blood, passion and, of course, sex. Argento stars as a nobleman’s fiery mistress who will not be dissuaded from getting what she wants despite his pledge to marry someone else. This is gonna be good.—AOT
