Flick You! VIFF 2007

Wednesday September 26, 2007

So the Vancouver International Film Festival starts tomorrow, and all the fan-boys are reeaally excited about the fourth installment of the Lord of the Rings: Bombadil’s Revenge. And while not quite as exciting as seeing Sook Yin Lee actually having sex in last year’s Shortbus, this year does feature a large programme of potentially awesome environmental films. But with over 300 movies screening, trying to figure out what to see can be an exhaustive process — especially since a lot of the movies play during the day. So this year, the Only editorial team has put together a comprehensive and daily guide to the movies we are, and by extension think you should be, interested in. We’ve skipped most (but not all) of the bigger films that will see major release in the coming months, focusing instead on smaller films, documentaries and animated stuff. Still, there are films from international big-wigs like Carlos Saura, Fatih Akin, Brian De Palma, Sidney Lumet and Gus Van Sant. There are movies from from Japan, Afghanistan, the UK, the US, Mexico, France, Iran, and of course, Winnipeg. And sure, there are probably one or two movies out there that you will discover for yourselves, but so what? You aren’t impressing anyone. Starting tomorrow, check in every morning for the daily listings, show times and locations of our picks, as well as for reviews and previews as we get to them. If you keep up with us, you won’t even have to go out and buy one of those catalogues. Just think of it this way: we’re saving you eight bucks… And saving mother nature too. Treat her well, she’s the only one we’ve got.
