I've Met An Number Of People This Summer Who Knew Absolutely Nothing About Pop Culture...

By Cameron Reed

Thursday September 4, 2008

I think that being well informed on current popular culture trends is just as important as being versed in politics and history. You can lament this ‘culture of convenience’, or whatever bullshit Communications students are calling it these days (“empty”, “meaningless”?), but Vanessa Hudgens nudes and pre-planned paparazzi shots of Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have more of an impact on our perceptions of life and our selves than the gentrification of the DTES. Pregos Jamie Lynn Spears and Bristol Palin: Same issue straddling two spheres. Watch that Bill O’Reilly “pinhead” double standard and try to tell me that pop culture doesn’t play a role in the way we look at the world. If you don’t follow the culture that you’re living in, whether you believe it’s meaningless or not, when are you living?

I’d hope that people are slightly more engaged politically, but I’m not going to go and tell them to trade in their TVs for stones anytime soon.
