David Ostrem detail

From now until mid-January, the CAG has Euan MacDonald thinking about cosmic awesome, and Trevor Mahovsky and Rhonda Weppler pushing their stubbornly bland formal hypotheses. Equally single-minded Daniel Oates’ show “Parralaxadaisical” is still up in the back of the Helen Pitt, quietly insisting away on his curious mix of retro formalism and proto-psychedelic trompe-l’oeil. A long-time practitioner of deadpan whimsicality heretofore sadly relegated largely to walls in local restaurants and hair salons, Vancouverite David Ostrem’s painfully precise, colorful acrylic technique was recently seen in the VAG’s PAINT and gets some further exposure, with some new photography work (detail, right), at Blanket Dec 14 through Jan 15. Kristin Lucas’ show at the OR runs until Jan 13. She’s known for making videos overtly preoccupied with digital technology in a hilarious and original way. She talks about the Internet in new ways with serious faith and high-IQ mechanical wizardry.
