Bike helmet laws are bullshit

By Cameron Reed

Yeah, that’s bullshit. A study was done, in Australia I believe, that found cycling-related accidents reduced exponentially when helmet laws were strictly enforced. Good news, right? Well, what they failed to account for was that the total number of cyclist reduced exponentially with the increase of fines.

Though not the one I’m referring to, here’s a good paper dealing with mandatory helmet laws in Australia.

Also, some context for the non-Vancouverites: Main and Hastings is the center of Vancouver’s street-level drug trade. To get a fine for something as stupid as that on this corner is akin to a ticket for jaywalking while some dude next to you shakes the shit out of a toddler.
